Battle for Title Board Anti-LGBTQ Ballots in 2024 Election

During the afternoon of April 3, Anti-Trans Ballots were reconsidered from the Colorado Title Board. The first initiative was led by Erin Lee, a mother who advocates for parental rights and is best known for her lawsuit against her daughter’s school district. and has since then been promoting far-Right Christian Nationalism.

Erin Lee’s goal for the ballots is to enable Title Board’s “Section 3. Inalienable Rights” over their children. Greg Lopez, who was selected to be Colorado’s GOP Nominee, was at the Title Board meeting to testify alongside Rich Guggenheim, a member of the Gays Against Groomer’s group, An anti-trans, far-right conservative group that advocates against transgender identities.

However, despite the attempts, their initiatives have been denied because they violate the single-subject rule, meaning the ballot must relate to a single subject. The Initiative procedures for ballots according to the Colorado Secretary of State say that Ballot titles must: be brief, cannot conflict with another ballot title selected for any petition previously filed for the same election; must be in the form of a question which may easily be answered “yes/for” or “no/against”; and must unambiguously state the principle of the provision sought to be added, amended, or repealed.

During the hearing, the Title Board stuck to the previous ruling because both were too broad and didn’t stay within the single-subject rule. However, it’s still concerning to have Colorado’s nominated GOP advocating and backing these ballots, if these were purposed to the public, it would result in heavily hurting the transgender youth.

Both ballot measures presented were rejected by the Colorado Title Board earlier this year in March. Rule #220 prohibits transgender athletes from competing in sports designated “for Females, Women, or Girls.” As well as “Males, Men, and Boys.” The other ballot, #175 prohibits students under the age of 18 from undergoing Gender-Affirming care such as hormone treatments or surgeries.
