‘Heartbreak High’ Star Ayesha Madon Comes Out as Bisexual

Ayesha Madon, star of the revamped teen drama, Heartbreak High, has come out as bisexual. In an interview with Gay Times, the 26-year-old actress and singer revealed her first kiss was with a girl in her acting class: “We kissed and it was amazing.” Madon admits she’s known her sexuality for years, but never talked about it publically.

Madon plays Amerie on Netflix’s Heartbreak High, which follows a group of high school teens navigating love, sex, and relationships. Madon’s Amerie does not identify as queer, but the show is known for its LGBTQ+ representation, including fan-favorite characters like Darren (James Majoos), a queer nonbinary student, and Quinni (Chloe Hayden), an autistic lesbian.

Heartbreak High is a reboot of a 90s Australian show of the same title. The original aired for seven seasons but unlike the reboot, contained no prominent queer characters. The new version tackles a variety of LGBTQ+ topics including asexuality, preferred pronouns, and coming out.

Madon recently released “Blame Me,” a follow-up single to her 2024 song “Eulogy.” Speaking to Gay Times, she claims her insecurities inspired the song and says, “I was exacerbated by the pursuit of perfection and how imperfection actually becomes quite taboo to talk about.”

Madon goes on to discuss feeling like “a fake queer person” because of how little she knows about queer culture, “Sometimes I feel that liking girls is not enough.” For Madon, she did not feel the need to discuss her sexuality publically. It’s just who she is.

Madon has won an AACTA (Audience Choice Award) for Best Actress and a Logie Award for Most Popular New Talent for her work on Heartbreak High. Madon, Majoos, and Hayden are set to return for the show’s third and final season. You can stream the show on Netflix.
