Ask The Sexpert: Mile High and Horny

Dear Shanna,
Now that pot is all legal and stuff in our great state of Colorado, I’m wondering about the impact that getting high can have on your sex drive, and sexual activity itself.
Any thoughts?

Dear Mile High and Horny,
What a great question, and one that is still being hotly debated. One of the biggest issues in answering this question is that individuals are affected so uniquely by cannabis. While people may also have different reactions to alcohol, the general consensus is that booze is a social lubricant, lowers inhibitions, inhibits ability to consent (at least legally in CO), and can certainly up the horniness factor. Pot, on the other hand? It depends on the strain, how high you are, how you personally react to different cannabinoids, the way in which you get high, and a ton of other factors. This makes it hard to give any super- specific advice about MJ and getting it on.
That said, there are some things to point out.
If you’re smoking, you’ll want to brush your teeth or use some mouthwash if you’ll be going down on a lady. While rolling your own joints promises fewer chemicals than a cigarette, you still don’t want to interrupt the delicate flora of those sensitive ladybits with smoke residue. (Just take the extra second to clean out your mouth.)
Are you trying to make a baby (using either penis-in-a-vagina methodology or with the help of a little science and a turkey baster)? Abstain from the weed for a bit — studies have shown that marijuana use significantly decreases sperm count.
Also, keep in mind that in the state of Colorado, you can’t give consent when you’re drunk or under the influence of drugs. I’m not saying you should never get hot and heavy when tipsy or slightly high, but definitely have consent conversations before you partake, and don’t try something completely new and different when neither of you can technically consent to switching up the game plan.
Some herb makes some people super horny. If this is you and you already know this, mazel tov and enjoy the aphrodisiac. If you’re not sure, consider asking your local budtender if any of their strains are known specifically for this. Some dispensaries even have cannabis pills designed to get your libido flowing. Just remember to start slow; don’t over do it. Try one new strain at a time, record your thoughts about how it impacts your sex drive (positively or negatively), and wait until the next day, week, or month to try something else. Stock up on lube so you don’t forget to use it, create a new, sexy soundtrack, and get down to it — by yourself or with your partner(s)!
Best of luck!
Shanna
