Sustainable Fashion Designers Showcase “Absolute Rubbish” at “A Trashion Show”

On September 19, models walked the runway in traditional fashion week style at MeowWolf in Denver, CO, for “Absolute Rubbish: A Trashion Show” with the added twist that each style was salvaged and up cycled from common trash items.

A “Trashion Show” is something that sounds like it’s straight out of hit reality competition show Project Runway, but is in fact, exactly what it sounds like: a collaboration of 20 designers and the maximalist art collective space, the show featured a mixture of design aesthetics, from ball gown silhouettes to futuristic sustainable fashion concepts.

sustainable fashionAs you may imagine, incorporating trash into ready to wear is not an easy thing to do. Crafting sustainable fashion from discarded materials can pose a formidable challenge, requiring meticulous assembly to harmonize with the model’s motion while simultaneously ensuring both aesthetic appeal and durability in the face of wear and tear. This complexity arises from the confluence of these individual feats.

To boost awareness of the “Absolute Rubbish: A Trashion Show,” event coordinators have strategically placed mannequins featuring creations from diverse participating designers throughout Denver. Their guerrilla-style marketing approach additionally involved a meet-and-greet session with the sustainable fashion creators, including designer Kate Major, which took place on Sunday, September 10.

According to insiders, the surge in refurbished and personalized secondhand clothing goes beyond mere arts and crafts. FutureMarketInsights.com forecasts a significant 91% growth in the recycled clothing market over the next decade from 2023 to 2033.
