A Guide to the New Mpox Strain
Mpox has been declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO). Though this may feel like a headline we’ve seen before, this is for a new strain of Mpox.
The strain from 2022, that had everyone worried about a second lockdown was called clade II. A vaccine has been developed for clade II which will also help to prevent against the new strain, clade I. The first time Mpox was made known to the world, there was a rise in queerphobia, specifically aimed at gay men. This article and this guide from One Colorado are here to help reduce the fear, stigma and risk of Mpox’s spread.
The new strain, clade I, has thus far been found to have spread from Africa to Europe and Asia. Though it hasn’t hit the U.S. yet, we know how contagious it is. Clade I can cause more serious illness than its predecessor and is more easily transmissible as well. It is vital to be aware of if you are a high risk vector for this strain of Mpox and to take the necessary precautions against contracting and spreading the virus. See the table provided by One Colorado below to determine your risk rating.
The same preventions as the first strain still apply, and the vaccine Jynneos for clade II helps to prevent it as well. If you think you are a high risk person for Mpox, public health experts advise to get the two-dose vaccination, and there are programs in place to get it to those at high risk for free. Vaccine clinics can be found here. Behavioral changes also reduce the risk of contracting it, such as staying away from crowded areas where others may not be fully clothed. Symptom are rash or bumps that may be located on the hands, feet, face, chest, or near the genitals. A fever, headache and exhaustion are also common symptoms. One Colorado is doing their best to provide information and timely updates about the virus and is glad to take any questions or concerns. Remember to stay safe and keep up to date as information on the virus develops.
