A uplifting and heartfelt story about an 87-year-old women and her transgender granddaughter is circulating the internet and is sure to bring a tear to the eye. A well-known blog shared the video of the grandmother/granddaughter combination. Although at first, the news affected her significantly, with a little time and reflection she’s now in proud support of her granddaughter. The internet has dubbed this “the most wholesome story” to watch.
The trans woman shared in the video is Instagram user @melanatedbitch and goes by Kali IRL. In an Instagram post, Kali shared the caption of the photo:
“The necklace I’m wearing in this photo was the first gift my grandmother gave to me after I came out to show her support for my transition. My grandmother was and is still my biggest support in my life. When I came out to her, I was scared she may not understand it and our relationship getting ruined. She was extremely worried at first about how society would treat me and had some health issues because of the stress, but she never let me know that she was worried.
“Slowly, with time, she started getting better and now fully loves me as the woman I am. She was the one who helped me make my mom and other relatives understand and accept me. I asked her if she wanted to be part of a reel for @officialhumansofbombay, and she was so excited to do it with me and she said she wants to give a strong message to society to help every transgender person out there to gain acceptance and love from their family.”
The Humans of Bombay Instagram account is a social media blog created by Karishma Mehta, and the account has roughly 1.8 million followers. They collaborated with Kali and her Dadi, which refers to the Hindi name for paternal grandmother. The Instagram reel has pictures and clips of the duo and includes captions explaining their touching story.
The caption attached to the reel states Kali’s Dadi no longer cares about “log kya kahenge”—which is a Hindi phrase that translates to, “what will people think.” The captions continued to read as follows:
“My granddaughter, Kali, was assigned male at birth, but a year ago, she told me, ‘Dadi, I’m woman.” While at first, her grandmother reportedly “didn’t take her coming out well, and fell ill,” she explains this was because she was “worried about her future” and “how society would treat her,” let alone the rest of their family.
Although after her health recovered, she decided to show up for Kali after seeing Kali “suffering” without support. “I wanted to put an end to it.” She then “took [her] jewelry … and gave it to Kali because she wanted to let her know I love and accept her.” Now she proudly introduces her as her granddaughter to everyone. I just want her to be happy,”
As the video is ending, Kali’s Dadi adds another caption stating, “If I can be 87 and accepting, I’m sure so can you!”
The video reel received well over a million views and has received 431,790 likes on just instagram alone. After receiving all this well-deserved attention, they want to be able to make a difference for struggling trans individuals, and they “hope this helps trans people everywhere.”
