Back in the days when the LGBTQ+ community was seen as an embarrassment by many outsiders, it is reasonable to understand why so many folks who were queer didn’t feel like they had the voice to truly come out and be authentically themselves.
Thanks to the advancements in the community in the past few years, many more adults are starting to feel better about the idea of living as their authentic selves. In 2023, Gallup released data analysis from telephone surveys that reached roughly 12,000 Americans. When the adults in each household were asked if they identified as LGBTQ+, about 7.6% of them answered yes. This is reported to be more than double the percentage of what was reported about 11 years prior at 3.5%.
While such surveys don’t always account for the entire population, they are helpful in being able to track the current path of the LGBTQ+ community. In recent years, we have been able to see progress in acceptance socially, although politically, it is a different concern.
According to additional data gathered from the survey, younger generations have a higher rate of identifying as LGBTQ+. More than half people who did identify as bisexual, while 1 in 6 identified as lesbian and gay, and 1 in 8 as transgender.
The increase in data is a reflection of continuing to fight for our rights as human beings and being able to separate ourselves from what is supposed to be “traditional.” It truly is starting to show how far we have come as a community. A big part of it is also from the acceptance of our beloved allies, as more and more have become comfortable being supportive of the LGBTQ+ community and trusting us with our love and care.
According to Gallup, if the trend continues upwards, we may see the amount of adults identifying as LGBTQ+ increase to 10% in the next three decades, meaning a more colorful future for all.
