5,280 Reasons to Fall in Love with Denver

“The Today Show” has ranked Denver among its top five friendliest cities in the US, and it’s easy to see why. Maybe it’s the sunshine, our (obsessive) appreciation for physical fitness or a little, erm, substance we were the first city to begin selling recreationally, but Denver is an undeniably happy and just a flat-out nice city.

It’s a shame, then, like citizens in almost every metropolitan location, we don’t really take the time to get to know one another — including our own (probably very friendly) neighbors.

Denver Days, a citywide effort launched in 2013 by Mayor Michael B. Hancock, hopes to change that.

Stating he created the event to reaffirm his “belief in strong communities that create a stronger city,” the celebration of Denver Days encourages neighbors to throw block parties to get to know each other and help local groups organize service projects that benefit greater Denver. A website for Denver Days includes a downloadable tool kit for participants that includes how to throw an unforgettable neighborhood shindig (menu ideas included), how to participate in local beautification and sustainability projects, and how to continue staying active within the community even after Denver Days ends. The kit suggests seasonal activity ideas to keep neighbors socializing with each other year round, including adorable ideas like “furry friend parties” and “snow buddies,” a community shoveling project.

The tool kit also includes important information about permit rules for large community get-togethers and laws pertaining to alcohol consumption in public places, such as parks. Nothing can kill a fun afternoon with new-found Denver friends quite like getting a ticket!

Denver Days kicks off August 2 and runs through August 10. However, as participants will find out (if they haven’t already), Denver is a truly special city; its charm doesn’t end with its magnificent scenery, innovative architecture, beautiful historic districts, or burgeoning arts and culture scene — it ends with its citizens. Denverites are among some of the most diverse and unique people in the country. May we celebrate — and be friendly to — one another the whole year through.
