The ‘I Am Cait’ costume is this year’s best seller
Earlier this year, Spirit Halloween, a halloween costume company, received a lot of flack for their Caitlyn Jenner costume, but according to the company it has quickly become one of their most sold costumes.
A Spirit Halloween rep said 1,000 units quickly sold out in August when the costume was first announced. And now, the costume the “I Am Cait” costume is breaking numbers that can only be matched by last year’s Elsa costume from Frozen. The costume replicates Caitlyn’s groundbreaking Vanity Fair cover, complete with white corset, white shorts, and a brown wig.
Activists took a stand against the costume.
“If a man wears the costume with the intention of mocking Caitlyn Jenner, and by extension all transgender women, that is just mean-spirited and unacceptable,” Nick Adams, GLAAD’s director of programs for transgender media, told The Washington Post. “Transgender women are women, and when Caitlyn Jenner or any other trans woman steps out into the world as her authentic self, she isn’t wearing a costume.”
But Caitlyn took a different stance on the costume.
“I’m in on the joke,” she told Matt Lauer in a September interview. “I don’t think it’s offensive at all. I know the community does and they’ve [Spirit Halloween] gotten a lot of criticism for doing it. I think it’s great.”
